How to do it. Turn off every tap and appliance that uses water, and don't flush anything. Find your water meter. Most have a small leak indicator — a triangle, a star, or a low-flow dial — that moves with even a trickle. Note the position and the exact time, wait at least fifteen to thirty minutes without using any water, then read it again.
If nothing has moved at all, nothing is being lost on the pressurised side of your plumbing. That's genuinely useful information rather than a dead end — it means any damp you have is coming from a drain, from rainwater, or from condensation, and it stops anyone hunting for supply pipes in your walls.
Barely perceptible movement. The indicator creeps rather than turns. Most likely: a toilet flapper passing water, a dripping tap, a weeping fitting or valve, or a slow seep at a supply connection. Slow but clearly continuous movement. The indicator turns steadily, and the reading changes noticeably over half an hour. Most likely: a persistent toilet leak, a small supply leak inside the structure, an irrigation valve seeping, or an early slab leak. What to do: isolate the irrigation and the water heater to halve the search, then book detection. This band is worth acting on now, because it's cheap to find and it won't stay this size.
Fast, obvious movement with everything off. The indicator turns visibly and continuously. Most likely: a slab leak, a service line break between the boundary and the building, a failed irrigation line, or a substantial leak inside the structure. What to do: shut off the main at the building — if the meter keeps moving, the leak is outside and it's the service line. Then call. This band costs real money every day it continues.
Movement so fast the dial is spinning. A major break. Shut off the water at the main immediately and call. There's no diagnostic value in leaving it running.
One caveat worth knowing: meters differ in what they measure and how sensitively they display it, so treat the bands as a way of sorting the problem rather than a precise measurement. What matters is the difference between nothing, barely, steadily, and fast — and that difference is obvious on any meter.
Those four steps take under an hour and between them they resolve or dramatically narrow the majority of unexplained losses.

Isolation and pressure testing. The foundation of the search — confirming which section is losing water, and confirming which sections hold. It costs nothing but method and it does most of the narrowing.

Thermal imaging. Maps temperature differences at surfaces — excellent on hot-side leaks and on evaporative cooling where water has spread through materials. It shows the extent of wetting, not just the point.
Moisture meters. Confirm how far moisture has actually travelled, which is almost always further than the visible mark suggests.
Drain camera inspection. For waste-side leaks — cracks, offsets, and failed joints found directly.
Tracer gas. Where a line can be emptied and charged with a detectable gas that escapes through the failure and is picked up at the surface. Useful where acoustic methods struggle.
Dye testing. For shower pans, toilet seals, and fixtures, confirming where water leaves the intended path.

The tells: a warm patch on the floor, an unexplained bill, running water with everything off, and new cracking in flooring or slab. Repair options include opening the slab at the failure point, rerouting the line above the slab, or lining in some cases — and which suits depends on location, pipe material, and how many failures there have been.
A service line leak is between the boundary and the building, buried and invisible. The meter test at the main valve identifies it in a minute — if the meter keeps turning with the building isolated, it's out there. Repair cost depends heavily on what's above it: open lawn is manageable, a driveway or a mature tree is not. Trenchless replacement is frequently available and worth pricing against excavation.
